The Story of One Freesia Brooch

Work In Progress 〰️

(2023)

I like challenges, and one day a person, let’s call her L, challenged me to make a piece of jewelry, a brooch, similar to AI Orchids. As it turned out, it wasn't as simple as I thought, and from the idea that in 2 days I would have everything ready and packed in a box with a bow, suddenly there were a couple of months of different attempts.

Long story short: AI can’t make a realistic-looking freesia flower. But that can’t stop me!

Btw why the name - One Freesia Brooch? Because that was the very first prompt (text input for AI) that I started with.

The Story of One Freesia Brooch - Part 1 - Naivity

To make a brooch, it was first necessary to generate flowers using artificial intelligence. But getting a nice buttery white-yellow freesia was not as easy as it sounds.

These are the best ones from probably 200 generated mutants.

The Story of One Freesia Brooch - Part 2 - Optimism

The freesia has a complex shape, and the thin lines of stems would break on the brooch, so I tried a couple of alternatives such as placing the flower on some object. Again, it didn't look good, but I think a couple of mistakes are quite interesting. I like it when artificial intelligence comes up with something really original.

Of course, none of them still looked like the real freesia flower :)).

The Story of One Freesia Brooch - Part 3 - Milk

I was disappointed with the results, so I tried to add a link to a part of L’s life just for fun : ).

The Story of One Freesia Brooch - Part 4 - Ikebana

OK, back to the original plan of generating a freesia flower with artificial intelligence and creating a brooch from the given image. Because the AI constantly generated bouquets and not one single flower as I needed, it occurred to me that there is usually only one flower in ikebana and it is a minimalist version, from which I can easily cut out the flower. How wrong I was... AI simply does not know what freesia is…

The Story of One Freesia Brooch - Part 5 - Slightly pissed off

I admit, that I was not satisfied at all with the results of many hours spent with AI trying to generate a freesia flower for a custom jewelry order. So it occurred to me to approach it completely differently. 3D scan of real flowers!

Thanks to the Polycam application, I scanned real flowers with my mobile phone. It was a bit tricky to install and hard to uninstall, but it did the job.

At this phase, I thought I would just let be the idea of using AI and simply 3D print the brooch with a resin printer.

But no no no, I’m a strong woman, I don’t give up so easily!

I think I will get back to these scans later.

The Story of One Freesia Brooch - Part 6 - Colorful drawing

In the meantime, I couldn't stand it and tried again to make a freesia flower with artificial intelligence after previous failures.

This time I tried a drawn version. It had beautiful colors, although it was not the freesia I needed. I played with this motive with mirroring and these images came out. I think it would make a nice scarf or hair accessorie.

On a few of the visuals some small hearts appeared, which was very cute : )

The Story of One Freesia Brooch - Part 7 - Color mass

Yes 7th series of attempts to generate a freesia flower with AI. Still not what I wanted. This series was a pure experiment with these flowers that looked like they were made from a thick acrylic mass.

I will show this part separately because I was " possessed " by playing with these amazing patterns!

No, this is not the end at all : )
